For all

Tribe Photo exists to democratise photography. We do this by heading to remote areas, teaching photographic skills, renting out cameras, and providing a platform to sell the best images made by the photographers.

Teach

Tribe Photo works on an image-based syllabus that can turn the barely-literate into great photographers.

Rent

Cameras are rented to photographers, so they place a value on them. This is an enterprise, not a charity.

Rental price is established by matching the local cost of a movie ticket, for two days camera rental.

Sell

Once the quality of a student’s photographs reaches a given level, the student is able to sell her work on the Tribe Photo platform.

She keeps half of all revenues collected.

Why do it?

GIVE PEOPLE opportunities

Photography is largely a rich-world phenomenon.

Even in poorer countries, many of the images come from a D5-wielding western photographer. Tribe Photo aims to change this. We will provide remote villagers with access to the skills and equipment to make great photos.

This will not just give the talented a source of income. It will give villagers a voice. This may even unearth entirely new genres of photography. We find this incredibly exciting.

Where it is?

ANYWHERE

A location requires a Tribe Photo Kit, consisting of teaching materials, cameras, a computer and a guide to using the platform. A photographer interested in establishing a Location must raise $4,000 from friends and family, through a platform such as GoFundMe. Half of the amount raised goes towards establishment costs for the new site, $1,000 to help the photographer’s travel costs and $1,000 to Tribe Photo’s platform costs. Anything raised over the $4,000 goes towards purchasing better equipment for that location.
